Background
For a number of years the European Commission has been focusing on building a European data economy, developing and bringing new data-driven services and products to market across all sectors of the economy.
The European Commission wants to know how the data economy in food systems (agri- and food sectors) in the Member States of the European Union is developing, what its effects are on the entire economy, and which indicators need to be monitored. In doing so, the Commission wants to pay particular attention to the "inclusiveness of the ongoing digital transformation in EU food systems [..] and the fairness of the data economy". This raises questions about the position of farmers and other (potentially vulnerable) stakeholders in the food system. E.g. how will data be shared, by whom, and in what way? Who will benefit from this, who misses out? And who is responsible if the data economy for food systems has a negative impact?
As part of the EU Data4Food2030 project that aims to shape a more inclusive and fair data economy for food systems, The Vrije Universiteit Brussel, together with foreign partners, is organizing workshops in six countries in the European Union. The six countries are the Netherlands, Belgium, Latvia, Poland, Slovenia and Spain. During these workshops, we want to explore with you what the future of the data economy for food systems will look like in 2050. In collaboration with you and various stakeholders, we will develop future scenarios of the data economy for our food system. This will provide direction on the current development of the data economy and input for EU and national policy makers on the next steps towards a fair and inclusive data economy for food systems.
